WiFi Projectors Explained

Jampierre FooquaFirst off, I want to say "Thank You" for visiting my  WiFiProjectors.com website. The purpose of this site is to explain and review the newest innovation in Digital and HDTV Movie ProjectorsBuilt-In WiFi Capability- in other words, projectors that have the built-in ability to wirelessly connect to a home or office Wi-Fi network.

In case your wondering, "Who the heck is this guy?", no worries. My name is Jampierre, and I'm a geo-petroleum engineer by profession, originally hailing from Alberta, Canada.  One of my passions is my Home Theater and Custom Audio hobby. I don't proclaim to be an expert in home theater or projectors in general by any means, but I think the information and knowledge I've collected, specifically in regard to Wi-Fi Projector technology is something I believe you will come away satisfied with. There's hardly any comprehensive resources on the web dealing with Wi-Fi Projectors. My goal is to built and promote WiFiProjectors.com, so it will eventually become the net's primary authority on the wireless projector niche.

When I first set out to create WiFiProjectors.com two years ago, I kind of had a problem - there were hardly any Wi-Fi Projectors actually available. True, there were a couple of Wi-Fi projectors for sale back then, but none that I would be proud to talk about, let alone  recommend.

The good news is that 2011 saw quite a few major projector manufacturers finally introduce HDTV Projectors with built in Wi-Fi networking that have great specs and features. Have these Wi-Fi Projectors finally delivered on the promise of merging the best projector technology with the newest Wi-Fi wireless networking? Does this combination of technologies live up to Wi-Fi's speed and ease of use that  most of us have come to depend on? Read on my fried,  to hear a little more about my story and to find out these answers ...

I got the idea to create a projector review website that focused on LED, LCD, and DLP movie projectors with built-in Wi-Fi capability after seeing so many other similar products like DVD and Blu-Ray players, printers, game consoles, multimedia centers, and even flat panel HDTV's benefit from  integrated  Wi-Fi networking. Wi-Fi has revolutionized the way content is consumed and utilized in these new devices. From streaming NetFlix from your wireless router, direct to your HDTV, to printing from your iPhone straight to a WiFi Printer, it's easy to take for granted how much impact Wi-Fi has had in only a few short years.

In the past couple of years, the evolution what was once "wired", has been transformed  to "wireless".  Wi-Fi has come a  long way in recent years. With Wireless-N's speeds of up to 108 Mb per second, streaming HDTV at 1080P resolution over a Wi-Fi connection is commonplace today. .Wi-Fi integration with high definition video products has become the new standard of convenience and performance.

With Wi-Fi networking, watching movies and videos that stream from your PC, Laptop, Media Center,(or any other DLNA compliant hardware) directly to your DVD / Blu-Ray player, HDTV, or game console like  the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have  practically eliminated the need to burn content onto DVD discs or USB memory sticks. Not long ago, "Wired Networks" at home were supposed to be the "Next Big Thing" , however snaking  and concealing CAT5 network cables at home would often turn into a nightmare in the old days - Video that is beamed over modern Wi-Fi networks has eliminated all that nonsense.

I'm happy to report that a nice assortment  of Wi-Fi enabled projectors have finally made their way to mainstream availability in 2011. Wi-Fi projectors that are specifically optimized for business or office use have also been introduced. While the overall select of Wi-Fi Projectors is pretty small when compared to "regular projectors", there is still plenty of great models to choose from, at all different price points.

What Make Built in Wi-Fi so Logical for Projectors?

When you think about it, built-in Wi-Fi networking for movie projectors is perhaps even more practical and beneficial than it is for DVD, Blu-Ray, and other video media players.  The reason I say this is because quite often the placement of the projector in your living room, home theater or office is quite often contingent upon a number of factors. One of the most significant being the ability for the projector to be adjacent to a source video feed, usually an HDMI  or HiDef Component cable.

One of the reasons I really love Wi-Fi projectors is that they often eliminate the need for the long run HDMI cables, and often ANY cables for that matter. Video cables that supply signals to the projector  typically need to "snake" up to the mounted projector. Quite often the projector is located on the ceiling in the rear of the room.A Wi-Fi projector can allow much more flexibility in locating, mounting, and installing the projector itself. Wi-Fi allows you to potentially eliminate all video feed cables going to the projector. All you would need to worry about is acquiring a 110V line for the projector's power cord.

This is a True Story about a Projector Installation

About 3 or 4 years ago I was helping my brother install and set up a pretty expensive movie projector. He converted his entire single car garage into a "miniature movie theater", complete with 15 real movie seats, red movie curtains, and even those lighted steps you see in the movie theaters. The last thing to be installed was the movie projector.

In my brother's case, he was basically planning to only play Blu-Ray and DVD movies from his PS3 to the projector. Hooking up a "Cable TV feed cable" to the projector was not a concern .  We ended up mounting the projector on the ceiling in the rear of the home theater, about 23 feet from the movie screen. His equipment cabinet that contained the audio equipment and PS3 console was located in the front of the theater. When it came time to connect the projector to the PS3, he wanted to go with an optimal quality video feed, namely an HDMI cable.  We opted for installing a HDMI cable that was 40 feet long, and connected the projector to an HDMI video switcher box up located in the equipment cabinet that was in the front of the room.

To my brothers displeasure, he discovered that the 40 foot HDMI cable was going to cost about 400 bucks! (they are much cheaper now). He bit the bullet and bought the cable. He and I figured snaking the HDMI cable would be prety easy. I had snaked dozens of speaker wires in wall, floors and ceilings over the years. "EASY" was certainly NOT the word we would have chosen with that HDMI cable!. Back then, the cable was probably 1/2" thick, and it was stiff as board. It took an practically an entire Saturday afternoon to install that monstrous HDMI cable. After it was done, we popped in a copy of Goodfellas to Christen the new projector's first movie in the new home theater.

To our horror, every scene that was mostly white or overly-bright would cause the video to cut out for a few seconds. We cursed the idea of pulling out the HDMI cable to check for problems, snags, or kinks that might be causing the problem. Fortuneately, the guy that sold us the cable informed us that we would likely need an HDMI Repeater, which was basically an inline amplifier that would boost the signal that somehow got degraded over the 40 foot run. Luckily, the HDMI repeater solved the problem - but not before subtracting about 100 bucks from my brothers availble credit on his Visa card.

The "take away" from this story is that a Wi-Fi Projector would have likely served my Brother's needs, without needing to install an HDMI or other video cables.  If  a quality Wi-Fi projector was  available back then, and we had we the same knowledge we have now,  I'm positive we would have purchased a Wi-Fi Projector is the first place.

If you're interested in a Wi-Fi projector, I have done a bunch of legwork on researching and reviewing the top rated Wi-Fi Projectors. I have narrowed down my recommended Wi-Fi Projectors to my #1 selection  in each of the following four categories:

Best Wi-Fi Projector for Business:  Specifically engineered and optimized for business presentations and bright images in lit rooms; often have presentation friendly remote controls and high quality built in speakers

Best Portable or "Travel Friendly"  Projector with Wi-Fi capabilities: Small and compact with rugged features for the road warrior business professional.
